Jarvis and Jarvis win Club Mixed Doubles

Congratulations to Gareth in winning his second club competition in a row, this time with his sister, Katherine, who took up petanque only a few months ago. They were undefeated in the six games they played in the ‘snake’ format for the nine teams who participated in glorious sunshine.

Although both teams won five out of their six games, Tony Mann and Libby Knowles were runners-up on points difference, while David Alfred and Lisa Compton (playing in her first club competition) came third. Well done to them and to everyone who participated.

The competition was followed by refreshing champagne and tasty cake to celebrate David Alfred’s 70th birthday on May 24.

Jarvis-Knowles Win Melee Doubles

Ten teams turned out today (Saturday 12 May) in the sunshine (sic) for our first half-day competition this year. In a ‘snake’, Gareth Jarvis and Libby Knowles, one of our newest members, were the only team to win all five of their games, and so won the day. Congratulations to them both.

Jill Gebbett and Ian Maynard came second while David Alfred and Jill Chrismas came third, both teams winning four games. Thanks to all our members who took part in the competition.

Fixture List 2012

We’ve just added this year’s fixture list as a new page in the “About” menu. It’s in two formats, the download version being in technicolour and cinemascope (for all those over 50).

We’re looking for a bumper turnout on Sunday for the Club Singles (it will be Ray’s last competition). You must register by 09.50 for a 10.00 start.

Winter Singles League Results

Out of a record 30 initial entries, 24 club members actually competed. The winner, losing only two games, was Ian Maynard. Congratulations to Ian, and well done to runner-up David Alfred and third-place Gareth Jarvis.

Official: our Stephan Alfred is fifth best shooter in England

Hearty congratulations to Stephan for achieving fifth place with a very creditable score of 27 in the EPA Champion of Champions shooting championship held on 16 October.

On the same day, four of our club members represented Sussex Petanque’s two triples teams: David and Stephan Alfred and David Randall; and Tony Mann with Jeff Mitchell and Herbie Edwards from Crowborough.

The two best teams of (nearly) all the EPA regions were split into two groups of 12 teams each. Each team played four games in a ‘snake’ with only the top two teams from each group going into the semi-finals and final.

Although David, Stephan and David unfortunately only won one game in their group, Tony’s team won three games to come third in their group, thus only just missing out on reaching the semi-final stage – a fine achievement. Well done to everyone.

EPA Over-50s Doubles Championship, 2 October

On that record warm October Sunday, 40 teams – the most we’ve ever seen on our terrain – came from far and wide for this event. A full report will appear later on in the next newsletter. Suffice it to say for now that the competition was a great success for the club, Sussex Petanque and the EPA. Thanks to all our members who worked hard before, during and after the event, with special mention of Janice Doherty who successfully and tastily ran our Cafe Carreau.

The day ended in two intriguing finals, with Jeff Mitchell and Herbie Edwards (Crowborough) winning the Main competition, and our very own Pat Connolly and Ian Maynard winning the Plate competition in a nail-biting finish. Congratulations to both teams.

Club Triples, 25 September

Congratulations to Ray, Ian and Anthony Blythe, for winning this competition. Anthony has only recently joined our club and is under 35, indeed under 25. In fact, he’s still only in his early teens and clearly has a great future in the game ahead of him. Well done, Anthony.

Five teams subscribed to this, our last one-day competition of the season. We should remember that triples is the classic format of the game.

The competition system was a round robin (where each team plays all the others). The odd number of teams meant there was a bye in each of five rounds of play.

The teams were: Ann/Rohan/Steve; David A/ Stephan/David R; Di/Mark/Gaby; Pat/Bob/David M; Ray/Ian/Anthony.

Neither team having lost any of their previous games, the contest between Ray, Ian and our new and youngest member, Anthony Blythe, and this year’s Sussex Pétanque’s second- seeded team of David A, Stephan and David R would decide the winners.

After Ray & Co got off to a storming lead of 10-0, David A & Co fought back to 11-9. However, in the last end Anthony, who was the shooter, scored the two winning points, a great semi-sautée shot of over 9m followed by nudging a front boule towards the jack: 13-9.

So, congratulations to Ray, Ian and Anthony who clearly has a very bright future in the game. He is a credit to the club and we wish him every success.

David A, Stephan and David R came second, and Ann, Rohan and Steve came third. Well done them and all who took part in the competition.

Inter-Regional Championships

Good luck to the four teams from our club included in the 8-team Main and 4-team Challenge Trophy squads representing the Sussex Petanque (SXP) region in the IRC this coming weekend.

They are SHADD, David and Stephan Alfred and David Randall (Main 2), 2P&aY, Terry Gibbons, Alan Issler and Tony Mann (Main 4), The M&Ms, Marcus and Margie Hayward, Martin Gordon and Trevor Allen (Challenge 1), J.O.B., Di and Mark Cherrie and Gaby Channing (Challenge 3).

Charity Doubles: 28 August

Eight teams set out from all points in sunshine but by the time they foregathered at the clubhouse clouds and rain raised their ugly heads (so to speak). However, the weather quickly bucked up, so that play could begin shortly after the due time of 1pm.

The format was a snake, each team playing four games by lot. (Has not our little plastic bingo machine been one of the club’s wisest investments?)

By the end of the afternoon, although both winning all four games, David and Stephan won the competition, by virtue of a superior points difference (+44) to that of Alan Issler and Tony (+29). Jill C and Ian came third. Well done to them and to all the contestants.

In the picture below, the père et fils duo are holding the Alan Smith Memorial Trophy. They chose as their charity the Somerset Day Centre, where Ray Ager and Bob White work.

Pointing and Shooting Competition, August 20

Over 20 club members rose to the testing challenge of the EPA Skills Award. As usual, Ray was MC. After he explained the rules, members paired off to do the various exercises at various distances.

The pictures below show the winners of the pointing and shooting sections. The overall winner, The Most Skilful Player, was Rohan. Especially for one who joined the club so recently, this is a fine achievement: “the boy done good”. In second place was Chris, who also made a very high score. Felicitations to both of them, to Ian who won the highly specialised discipline of throwing the jack (the proper French word being but (pronounced somewhere between ‘boot’ and the island of Bute), bouchon, petit or cochonnet please, not coche) and to all the other winners.
