About the club

The BHPC team at Brean Sands, 2009
The club welcomes players of all standards, from complete beginners to aspiring champions. We meet throughout the year and offer a variety of practise sessions, competitions and social events. If you join the club, you’ll have the opportunity to play with more experienced players who will be pleased to help you learn all about the game.

The club offers free coaching for members – if you learn to play correctly, you’ll get a lot more enjoyment out of the game. Pétanque is best played as a team game. If you’ve only played "singles" (head-to-head) games you’re missing all the fun of team roles and tactics – come and join us! If you want to play just-for-fun, that's fine - there are plenty of social players who enjoy a cup of tea and a natter as much as the game itself - but the club also runs and annual triples, doubles and singles competitions, informal knock-out tournaments, winter and summer leagues, plus open competitions with other clubs.

In 2009, the club reached a milestone 100 members and continues to support players of all skill levels. A number of players from the club also make up the BHPC Team which play in the EPA European Cup for Club Teams.

The club is affiliated to Sussex Pétanque, the local region of the English Pétanque Association, so you can also play at a "Regional" as well as National level.

When and where to play

The club meets regularly at the Peace Statue Terrain in Brighton & Hove on
  • Saturday afternoon (1pm winter, 2pm start summer)
  • Sunday afternoon (1pm winter, 2pm start summer)
  • Wednesday evenings (club leagues and tournaments)
The club also meets at the Hove Lagoon Terrain in Hove on Tuesday afternoons.

Club meetings are not exclusive - anyone can turn up and join in and "play on the day".
The club carries a large stock of competition quality boules, of different sizes and weights which are freely available for members and non-members to use. If you are attending for the first time, you may be offered some coaching and an introduction to the rules.

How to join

Being a member of the Brighton & Hove Petanque Club offers many benefits. For a start, the Peace Statue Terrain, on the borders of Brighton and Hove offers one of the most breath-taking views for anyone who comes along to enjoy the game.
With plenty of interest from passers-by during the summer months, you can be sure of an audience who will clap and cheer when a spectacular shot is played, and share your commiserations when a boule is fluffed - they really are quite a discerning lot down on the Brighton seafront!

With affiliates to the Sussex Petanque Club and the English Petanque League you can take your game to the next level!

But there is also a thriving social community of players and you can be sure that whenever you turn up, you can be sure of a warm welcome and to get a game in (or three). The terrain is right next to the Meeting House Cafe so a hot meal and a drink is always close to hand!

Membership costs just £15.00 for a whole year.
This allows the club to invest in equipment (such as training aids, scorecards, printing and stationary) as well as put on a number of tournaments throughout the year. To join the club, simply collect or ask for a membership form at any of the club meetings, or fill out the online form below:
